ABOUT THE ARTIST

Mumbai based artist Priya Gaekwar was artistically inclined from a young age. Studying Art and History of Art at boarding school in England, she was awarded the Art Scholarship. Priya went on to study interior design at the Inchbald School of Design in London. On returning to Mumbai, she worked with some of Mumbai’s best-known interior designers and architects, honing her design aesthetic.  To broaden her design experience, she worked in graphics, furniture, web and print design, creating a diverse body of work.

In 2006 she began a career in luxury retail with the iconic brand Louis Vuitton. Here she immersed herself in the world of Vuitton it’s high level design, craftsmanship and attention to detail. The brand's artistic collaborations (Richard Prince, Stephen Sprouse, Yayoi Kusama, Olafur Eliasson, to name a few) and patronage of the arts presented a constant and steady focus on creativity and design.

These diverse collective experiences, inspiring teachers and mentors, as well as time spent in research and exploration of interior design, product design, lighting, textiles and surface treatments, developed her keen awareness and appreciation for design in general.

Through the years Priya would find small bite size chunks of time to sketch and paint. In 2020 un interrupted time presented its self in the form of  ‘Covid Lockdowns’ this has allowed her to return firmly to painting. Creating works in mixed media and collage she works instinctively. The outcome of the piece may not be known when she begins, the artwork evolves in a meditative way.

She is currently working on multiple different series and looks to create works that are playful and intuitive. Vibrant and layered for discovery, inviting the viewer to apply their own experiences and find what they seek in her works.
